In its last meeting on 16 March 2018, the FIFA Council approved the use of the Video Assistant Referee during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. With the goal of maximum benefit with minimum interference, VAR will assist the referees and help them to officiate games more effectively.
“It's not a question of refereeing the match with technology. The goal has never been to check every minor incident”, said Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, during a World Cup preparatory seminar in Coverciano, Italy. “It's about avoiding clear and obvious major errors.”
