FIFA President Gianni Infantino has travelled to the United Arab Emirates to offer condolences to the ruling family, following the passing of the President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa came to power in 2004,  having previously served as Abu Dhabi’s prime minister and chairman of the UAE’s Department of Defence while the area was still a British protectorate. After the Gulf Nation gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1971 - he served as defence minister, among other senior government roles, before becoming President 18 years ago. He is succeeded by his brother, Sheikh Mohammed.

Speaking from Abu Dhabi, President Infantino said: “It is with the deepest sympathy that I send my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of Sheikh Khalifa Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – and to the people of the United Arab Emirates on this sad occasion.

“Sheikh Khalifa was a noble man and a visionary leader. The relationship between FIFA and the United Arab Emirates has been long-standing and, working closely with Sheikh Khalifa, we have been able to stage many wonderful events in the UAE, thanks to that vision and ambition.

“My thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time, and in particular with the new President, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan."
