THE DAY REPLAYED – Ghana and New Zealand became the first teams to qualify for the quarter-finals at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Uruguay 2018 thanks to their respective victories over Finland and Uruguay. New Zealand, participating at their sixth finals in this age category, reached the last eight for the first time ever. Elsewhere, Japan were in free-scoring mood against South Africa, while Mexico narrowly edged Brazil.

Memorable moments Children take over Maldonado stadium In Uruguay, pupils at some public schools can decide if they want to go to classes in the mornings or afternoons. For those who opt for the former, the weekend began with a World Cup treat and the children at the stadium in Maldonado created a fantastic atmosphere for the teams to enjoy.

Historic goals Japan had plenty of reason to celebrate against South Africa, as Haruka Osawa's strike to put them 2-0 up meant they became the first country ever to reach the 100-goal mark in the history of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. Furthermore, Sara Ito's effort to make it 4-0 was another milestone achievement, representing the 600th goal in tournament history.

Unusual celebration Fans were left baffled when Vanessa Buso scored for Mexico, after she ran over to her coach Monica Vergara and performed a short celebratory dance that consisted of several different hand movements. After the final whistle, Vergara explained that she has come up with a special choreography with each of her players.

Parental comfort The Finnish players sank to the ground when the final whistle blew on their match in Montevideo, their second defeat in as many games at their tournament debut causing tears to flow. They were consoled by their parents, who hugged and encouraged them for several minutes in touching scenes around the stadium.

To be able to achieve that goal is amazing. We just took each game as it came. To be able to say we made history for our country is just incredible."
