FIFA President looks ahead to knockout rounds after Group A and B denouement

  • Gianni Infantino witnesses Tunisia and UAE reach quarter-finals

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is looking forward to some mouthwatering quarter-final clashes at the FIFA Arab Cup 2021™ after Groups A and B concluded on Monday with Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Oman sealing their places in the knockout rounds alongside hosts Qatar.

Mr Infantino was at Al Thumama Stadium as Tunisia earned top spot in Group B with a narrow win over United Arab Emirates before taking in Qatar’s third match of the tournament, against Iraq. The President had numerous discussions with members of the FIFA Council and delegates from member associations during the evening and also shared some thoughts on the tournament so far and its impact.

“It’s a great competition, with a fantastic atmosphere,” said Mr Infantino. “We can see that things are getting serious, now that teams are getting through to the quarter-finals. Stadiums are increasingly excited, people feel part of it and the teams are playing their part. It’s not only an important test ahead of the FIFA World Cup, it’s also very important for the teams.

“We are looking forward to the best FIFA World Cup in history: a unique World Cup," he added. “Everything is ready, and the stadiums are beautiful. Some adjustments are still required but we are here and we’ll be working through the year in order to offer an unforgettable experience to all those who come here when the world will be united in Qatar.”
