Draw date set at start of stadium visits

  • Joint delegation to visit the four stadiums that will host FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018

  • Competition draw to be held on 8 March

  • The draw has been scheduled to coincide with next year’s International Women’s Day

Representatives of FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 have travelled to Brittany for a four-day visit during which they will conduct a preliminary inspection of the four stadiums hosting the competition. The joint delegation visited the town of Vannes on Tuesday 7 November and will be in Concarneau on Wednesday, Saint-Malo on Thursday and Dinan-Lehon on Friday.

FIFA and the LOC began the visit by announcing that the final draw will be held at Rennes Opera House on Thursday 8 March 2018, a symbolically important date, as it is on International Women’s Day.

“We visited the Opera House yesterday and it is a spectacular place,” said FIFA Senior Competitions Manager Rhiannon Martin. “The teams attending the draw will enjoy a wonderful slice of French culture.”

Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, England, New Zealand, Japan, Korea DPR and China PR have already qualified for the competition, along with host country France. There are seven places still to be decided in the CAF, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF zones.

The tournament takes place from 5 to 24 August 2018. The opening match will be played at the Stade de la Rabine in Vannes, which will also provide the venue for the semi-finals and the final.
