CAF and FIFA workshop to set out new strategic pathway for women’s football in Africa
Women’s football experts from across Africa gather to help build the first ever women’s football strategy for Africa
FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer: “This workshop is an important stepping stone in shaping the future of African women’s football”
The development and growth of women’s football in Africa took an important step forward last week as the FIFA/CAF Women’s Football strategy taskforce workshop took place in Cairo, Egypt.
Bringing together women’s football stakeholders from across Africa, the workshop provided an important opportunity for participants to discuss current structures and projects in place for women’s football in Africa, as well as laying the foundations for the development of an overall strategic framework.
The framework is based on the five pillars of the FIFA Women’s Football Strategy which was designed to support member association and Confederations to create their own tailor made strategies specific to their own unique environments.
The workshop was facilitated by a team from FIFA’s Women’s Football Division who are committed to empowering women in football.
FIFA’s Chief Women's Football Officer, Sarai Bareman shared the objectives of the global women’s football strategy with participants:
“FIFA launched its global strategy for women’s football in 2018 and it’s a natural next step that CAF creates its own tailor-made strategy for the women’s game in Africa.
“The opportunities that exist in this continent to grow the women’s game and realise its full potential are huge. It’s exciting to be able to hear directly from the foremost experts in African women’s football to help shape the future for the women’s game and I am positive that this workshop will leave a lasting legacy for many years to come”
CAF President Ahmad Ahmad joined the participants at the opening of the workshop, reinforcing his support of the women’s game and highlighting it as a key priority for CAF:
"I urge all of you here to seize this tremendous opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the development of women's football on our continent. Your ideas and expertise will help us to establish a strong roadmap for women’s football that will give every young African girl who wants to play the opportunity to do so, regardless of her level and her country of origin”.
