  • BSC Young Boys win inaugural women's title

  • Swiss side defeated Valencia CF 1-0 in the final

  • Ilona Guede Redondo voted player of the tournament

WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT REVIEW - The first-ever women’s tournament at the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup certainly had a worthy winner! BSC Young Boys emerged victorious after a tense final, defeating Spanish club Valencia CF 1-0. Striker Ilona Guede Redondo scored the winning goal after bagging a brace in the semi-final, meaning that she was responsible for three of her team’s five goals in Buchlern. And at the end of the two-day competition, she was fittingly chosen as player of the tournament.

The team from the Swiss capital built their success from the back, not conceding a goal in four matches. They came through Group A in second place, thanks to goalless draws against Inter Milan and Grasshoppers before clocking up a 4-0 win in the semi-finals over FC Zurich, who had cruised through their opening two group matches, scoring nine goals and conceding just one.

Hosts FC Blue Stars, unfortunately, managed no goals and no points after suffering defeats to both Zurich and Valencia in Group A. Curiously, there were no fewer than 12 goals scored in the three Group A games, while in Group B, the fans only had one goal to cheer. Claudia Budimir gave Grasshoppers a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan, securing top spot for her team in the process.
