A clean sweep for France in Group C

  • A rotated French squad topped Haiti 2-0 in Goiania

  • Georginio Rutter completed a two-minute brace

  • Les Bleuets finish atop Group C

France surpassed Haiti 2-0 on Saturday and joined Brazil as the second team to earn maximum points from their group stage matches at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019™. No9 Georginio Rutter's second-half brace helped Les Bleuets put away a determined Haiti side who acquitted themselves well for most of the match.

France looked in control for most of the match. Rutter netted a penalty in the 78th minute, then caught the Haiti defence completely out of position a minute later, heading Adil Aouchiche’s cross into the net to complete his brace. As first-place finishers, the French next face a third-place side in the Round of 16 on 6 November in Goiania.

The Haitians held out and even excelled against the favoured side until conceding the penalty that led to France’s first goal. Goalkeeper Judler Delva, supplanting Stephner Paul, made all the saves he was supposed to and more, which included a trio of excellent stops in the first half on France’s Enzo Millot. Les Grenadiers leave Brazil 2019 empty handed, demonstrating an impressive fighting spirit but missing out on earning any points.
