Buenos Aires to host 2018 Youth Olympics

Buenos Aires will host the 2018 Youth Olympic Football Tournament, after triumphing in a vote ahead of the third-ever instalment of the games.

The Argentinian capital saw off the likes of Medellin, Colombia, and Glasgow, Scotland, to earn the right to put on the competition, which will feature athletes from around the world competing in the games as a whole, alongside the FIFA-run football competition.

With each city's bid team being given the opportunity to give a 15-minute presentation, Buenos Aires eventually beat their South American counterparts 49-39 in the second round of voting by IOC members, after Glasgow had been eliminated.

The tournament will follow on from Singapore 2010 and Nanjing 2014, with IOC president Jacques Rogge wishing the victors well ahead of their five-year preparations for the games. “We had three excellent candidates from which to choose a host city today, each with the capability of staging memorable Youth Olympic Games in 2018,” said Rogge at the vote in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“I would like to congratulate Buenos Aires and their bid team for their dedication to and enthusiasm for the Youth Olympic Games project.”

Gerardo Werthein, President of the Argentine Olympic Committee and a member of the IOC, was delighted to see his team's efforts pay off. "I am absolutely thrilled that the IOC has awarded the 2018 Youth Olympic Games to Buenos Aires," he said . "I would like to express my thanks to [IOC] President [Jacques] Rogge and all the members of the IOC who have placed their trust in us.

"And we will not let them down. We feel this is the right time for Buenos Aires, Argentina and the Olympic Movement to join together and advance the cause of the Olympiad among young people across the globe," he concluded.

Bolivia triumphed in the inaugural Boys' Youth Olympic Football Tournament in Singapore, beating Haiti in the final of the six-team competition. Meanwhile, Chile beat Equatorial Guinea on penalties in the final of the Girls' competition.
