South Africa are the only team of the continent's three representatives at Tokyo 2020 to make two consecutive appearances at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament, having also competed at Rio 2016. Tokyo 2020 will be their third appearance as they strive to qualify to the knockout stage for the first time.
The road to Tokyo
South Africa finished in third place at the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, which qualified them for Tokyo 2020. They were beaten by hosts Egypt 3-0 in the semi-finals, but recovered from the setback to defeat Ghana 6-5 on penalties after their match for third place finished in a 2-2 draw.
