The Pharaohs have a long history in the competition, however they have yet to reach the podium. Egypt are making their 12th overall appearance at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament and first since London 2012, where they were knocked out by Japan 3-0 in the quarter-finals. Their best performances came at Amsterdam 1928 and Tokyo 1964, when they finished in fourth place on both occasions.
The road to Tokyo
Egypt won the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, defeating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 after extra time in the final. They booked their place at Tokyo 2020 by defeating South Africa 3-0 in the semi-finals.
