South Africa secured Africa's final place at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016, with victory after penalties against Senegal in the third-place play-off of the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nothing could separate the sides in Dakar after regulation time as the match ended goalless. Senegal had the opportunity to take the crucial lead in the 72nd minute, but defender Moussa Wague had his penalty saved by South Africa goalkeeper Jody February, whose heroics continued into the shoot-out.

South Africa's Gift Motupa scored his side's first penalty, while Senegal's Sylvain Badji missed his, setting the tone for the eventual outcome, with South Africa winning 3-1 on penalties in the end.

South Africa return to the Olympic stage after a 16-year wait, following their sole appearance at Sydney 2000, which saw them exit at the group stage despite a victory against 2016 hosts Brazil.

South Africa join Nigeria and Algeria in Rio de Janeiro. Nigeria narrowly defeated Algeria 2-1 in the final of the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
