There were some big scores and a few withdrawals as the African round of preliminary qualifying for the Olympic Football Tournament Men Athens 2004 reached its conclusion.
Kenya’s 15-0 aggregate (11-0 home, 4-0 away) thrashing of Somalia was the outstanding scoreline but there were also impressive victories for Ethiopia (2-1 versus Sudan), Seychelles (2-1 versus Mauritius), Botswana (5-3 versus Swaziland), Rwanda (3-1 versus Malawi) and Chad (6-1 versus Libya).
There were also walkover wins for Mauritania, Congo and Gambia following the respective withdrawals of Cape Verde Islands, Central African Republic and Guinea Bissau. Equatorial Guinea and Benin, who were due to play each other, both withdrew meaning Tunisia, the team the winners were set to face in the first round, go immediately through to the second round.
With Angola awaiting the result of the one preliminary second-leg tie outstanding (Lesotho and Mozambique 0-0), the list of first round fixtures is close to completion. The two-legged home/away ties will be played on 13/14/15 June and 27/28/29 June 2003.
The 16 winners will then be divided into four groups of four with the winners of each league going on to compete in Athens.
