FIFA is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr Jacques Georges during the night of Wednesday, 25 February.
FIFA’s debt to this great football dignitary is immeasurable. It has sent sincere condolences to his family, friends, the French football association and UEFA as well as expressions of support at a time of great loss and sadness.
Mr Jacques Georges served football in many roles with an exemplary sense of duty. In his capacity as President of the French football association from 1968 to 1972, he set a new course for the future direction of French football. In 1978, he joined FIFA as a member of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup™ before becoming vice-president of FIFA in 1983 - a position which he occupied until 1994 – following his election as President of UEFA. He also acted as chairman of the FIFA Finance Committee in 1983 and as chairman of the Technical Committee from 1990 onwards.
Mr Jacques Georges was nominated as an honorary member of FIFA on 16 June 1994.
“I am deeply grieved by his passing. It was always a privilege for me to be reassured of his warm-hearted friendship and loyalty, and his wise counsel invariably helped me in my career. I regarded him as one of my mentors,” commented Joseph S. Blatter.
The FIFA President will be attending Mr Jacques Georges’ funeral.
