Cruz Azul defeated Pachuca 2-1 in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday to take a slim lead on home turf, as they aim to claim their first title.

Emmanuel Villa capitalised on an error by Gregorio Torres to open the scoring after 20 minutes, and the home side doubled the lead just four minutes later thanks to an own goal from Maximiliano Biancucchi.

However Damian Alvarez pulled a goal back midway through the second period to leave the tie well poised going into next week’s second leg in Pachuca.

Cruz Azul, which has lost its last three trips to the Mexican league finals as well as last year's CONCACAF Champions League title series to Atlante, will look to complete the victory next Wednesday.
