Many clubs around the world hit the ground running in 2013 as the international transfer market saw a flurry of activity at the start of the year. From 1 to 31 January 2013, 1,748 transfers (with first instructions and closure during the month) were completed in FIFA‘s Transfer Matching System. Clubs from 145 countries across the globe were involved in transfer activity over this period.

Having said this, international transfers for this part of the year are far from over, as there are many associations with registration periods closing in February, March and even April. When compared with the figures from January 2012, the January 2013 registration period showed a three per cent increase in the number of transfers. At the same time, the total amount of declared transfer compensation in January 2013 remained significant with $ 417m.

61 per cent of completed transfers in TMS were transfers where players signed with a new club while being out of contract. 11 per cent of all completed transfers in January 2013 represented clubs engaging a player from another club on a permanent basis. The remaining 28 per cent of transfers related to loans.
