FIFA Futsal World Cup record
Lithuania 2021 will be Russia’s seventh appearance at the FIFA Futsal World Cup. On their tournament debut in 1992, the eastern Europeans had something of a baptism of fire, crashing out in the opening round. However, they followed that with a third-place finish (1996), two fourth places (2000 & 2008), a quarter-final (2012) and a runners-up spot at the last edition in 2016, when they narrowly lost to Argentina in the decider.
The road to Lithuania
During the UEFA World Cup qualifiers, Russia progressed with assurance from the Main Round with comprehensive wins over Sweden (7-3) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (4-2), as well as a draw with Croatia (2-2). In the Elite Round, however, this star-studded side were pushed all the way and went into their final game with a World Cup ticket on the line. Russia had earlier swept aside Serbia (7-1) before losing their second game to Azerbaijan (4-3). With their backs against the wall, they finally secured qualification with a 4-3 victory over Croatia (4-3).
