The finest gaming talent from Austria, Germany and Switzerland battled it out today at the home of FIFA in Zurich for the chance to qualify for the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) Grand Final in Dubai.
Beginning in April, over 4,000 players from across the three nations competed in the seven national pre-qualifier events. From the field of FIWC hopefuls, 20 gamers managed to qualify for the Austrian, German and Swiss final, resulting in a day of fierce competition in Zurich.
Germany’s Kai Wollin emerged victorious, securing his place in the Grand Final, where the prestigious prizes of an invite to the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala and a coveted $20,000 will go to the eventual World Champion.
Kai beat fellow German Daniel Tissarek 3-1 in an unconventional final head-to-head that saw AC Milan come up against Portugal. Wollin’s AC Milan dominated possession in the first half before finally putting the ball in the back of the net on the stroke of half-time as Zlatan Ibrahimovic expertly finished off a slick passing move.
Winning today’s event at the home of FIFA also makes it extra special and something that I will never forget.
It was 2-0 just 15 minutes later as Ibrahimovic was again involved, this time as the provider for Alexandre Pato, who found space in between Pepe and Bruno Alves to finish clinically. The unrelenting pressure continued and Pato was on hand to put the game out of reach on 70mins as he stroked home a third goal.
Daniel came out fighting and immediately pulled a goal back through Cristiano Ronaldo from the penalty spot after Danny was brought down, but it proved to be too little too late.
Kai commented: “I am delighted to have qualified for the Grand Final, and travelling to Dubai to compete really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Winning today’s event at the home of FIFA also makes it extra special and something that I will never forget. The level of competition today was really strong as expected and is great preparation for the Grand Final.”
Contestants can still participate in this year’s FIWC through an online tournament played on the PLAYSTATION®Network, by registering ‘in-game’ in FIFA ’12 on their PS3. Don’t miss out on your chance to claim a seat at the FIWC showpiece.
