History savoured as a new chapter beckons

  • New series to celebrate the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup

  • Stars like Hamm, Prinz, Marta and Lloyd feature in first highlighted video

  • France 2019 takes place between 7 June and 7 July

Women’s football is stronger than ever, and next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup™ promises to be the biggest and best yet.

But the tournament has become a focal point in the football calendar thanks to seven previous action-packed editions, all of which have featured thrills, spills and hugely talented players.

In this new series, FIFA.com will be looking back to some of those editions’ most memorable moments with the help of eye-catching images and footage from Women’s World Cup history.

This video provides the perfect introduction. There are legends aplenty, from pioneering figures like Michelle Akers, Hege Riise, Birgit Prinz and Mia Hamm all the way through to modern-day greats Marta and Abby Wambach.

Historic moments are also celebrated, with Brandi Chastain’s iconic celebration, Nia Kunzer’s golden goal, Japan’s emotional shootout victory and Carli Lloyd's extraordinary long-range goal among many to whet the appetite.

This is just the start, though, and you can expect much more from the FIFA vaults as we continue to build towards next year’s eagerly anticipated showpiece.

Did you know? The FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy is currently on display at the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich.
