Djeumfa replaces Ndoko as Cameroon coach

  • Alain Djeumfa, 46, appointed Cameroon coach

  • He was part of predecessor Joseph Ndoko’s coaching staff

  • Djeumfa: “We want to do better than in 2015”

Alain Djeumfa will lead Cameroon to the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ after being named as the team’s new coach.

The 46-year-old succeeds Joseph Ndoko, who guided the Indomitable Lionesses to the global finals with a third-place finish at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Djeumfa, who was Cameroon's fitness coach in Ghana, has previous management experience with several top flight clubs in his homeland. He will be assisted by Bernadette Anong, a former Lionesses captain.

"I feel honoured with the appointment and I'm aware there is a daunting task ahead with the World Cup in France fast approaching," he told BBC after taking the reins.

"We are starting work immediately and we need to have a great preparation ahead of the France event. We want to do better than in 2015 and we think we have what it takes to succeed."

Cameroon reached the Round of 16 at Canada 2015 and will face Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands in Group E in France.
