England manager Gareth Southgate has signed a new four-year contract, with the FA announcing the deal will see the Three Lions coach through to the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ in Qatar.

Southgate led the 1966 World Cup winners to a fourth-placed finish at Russia 2018, the country's joint-best placing at a World Cup on foreign soil.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the national team through the next two major tournaments,” Southgate said to TheFA.com, after signing his new deal.

“The job remains an incredible privilege and a true honour. Experiencing at first-hand how the nation united behind the team this summer was something special and it will be great to see how far this young squad can go in the years to come. I must acknowledge the hard work and commitment of my staff and the players over the last two years. I have learned a great deal from them and their passion and professionalism in representing England has been an inspiration to my own work."

One of the most memorable moments of England's run to the semi-finals was undoubtedly their Round of 16 penalty shootout victory against Colombia. Southgate oversaw the Three Lions' first World Cup shootout win, having missed a significant spot kick during his playing days in the UEFA EURO 1996 semi-final on home soil.

His side were eventually defeated by Croatia after extra time in their final four clash at the Luzhniki Stadium, and despite their defeat to Belgium in the play-off for third place, England achieved their best senior World Cup placing - in the men's finals - since Italy 1990.

England's next challenge comes in the UEFA Nations League, where they face tough tests against their Russia 2018 conquerors Croatia and 2010 World Cup winners Spain on 12 and 15 October respectively.
