Ferretti named Mexico interim coach

  • Mexican federation confirms Ferretti will take caretaker role

  • This is Ferretti's second stint as interim coach for El Tri

  • Ferreti will remain as Tigres UANL coach

The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed that Tigres UANL head coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti will coach the senior men's national team for their upcoming September friendlies against Uruguay and USA.

"The Mexican Football Federation is happy to inform that it has arrived at an agreement with coach Ricardo Ferretti and Club Tigres for him to manage the Mexican national team as an interim in the games El Tricolor that will take part in during the next FIFA dates," a statement on the federation's official website said.

Ferretti will remain as Tigres head coach, where he is under contract until 2020.

Mexico will face Uruguay on 7 September in Houston, Texas, before going up against rivals USA in Nashville four days later.

This is the second time that Ferretti will take an interim role with El Tri. He guided Mexico to a 3-2 win over USA in the CONCACAF Cup, which sealed the nation's qualification to the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017.

Mexico's performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ included an historic victory over Germany in their opening match. They qualified for the knockout stages, but for the seventh consecutive edition of the world finals, they were eliminated in the Round of 16, losing 2-0 to Brazil.

Ferretti is a short-term replacement for Juan Carlos Osorio, who stepped down as head coach after Russia 2018.
