Al Wakrah

Established: 1828 Population: 141,222 Distance from Doha: 17 km

Al Wakrah is one of Qatar’s largest and oldest continuously inhabited cities. Established in 1828, it is located on the southeastern coast of Doha, approximately 17 km from the capital.

Al Wakrah boasts a superb sandy beach and is home to many historical sites, including examples of its traditional housing. Its regional museum contains a range of environmental and archaeological exhibits, and chronicles the city’s natural history, arts and architecture.

In the past, the city was famous for its fishing harbour and natural pearl trade. The design of the Al Janoub Stadium, which will host matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, was inspired by the dhow boats that were used by the city’s inhabitants. Al Wakrah has many old forts and interesting historical buildings.

Established more than 60 years ago, Al Wakrah Sports Club is one of the country’s oldest football clubs and is a two-time winner of the Qatari first division.
