2018 hosts Russia will be looking for a new coach to lead them into the next World Cup after Leonid Slutsky stepped down after UEFA EURO 2016.

The 45-year-old decided to step down after his side failed to qualify for the group stage after failing to win any of their three matches in France. Indeed, a 1-1 draw with England in their opening fixture was their only point from a disappointing campaign.

“The Russian Football Union would like to thank Leonid Slutsky who led the team’s qualification to UEFA EURO 2016 finals, for his professionalism and wishes him success in his coaching career. Information about the new coaching stuff will be published in due course”, said the Russian FA in a statement issued today.

Slutsky was appointed as his country's coach on 7 August 2015, taking over from Fabio Capello on a short term basis. At the time, Russia were not expected to qualify, but four straight wins victories under his stewardship booked them a place at the continental championship His contract was subsequently extended.

While in charge of Russian national team, Slutsky also coached CSKA Moscow where he will return in due course.
