  • Appiah led the Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™

Ghana have turned to a familiar face to take charge of the Black Stars after re-appointing Kwesi Appiah as coach on a two-year contract, the Ghana Football Association announced Tuesday.

The 57-year-old will assume his duties on 1 May and succeeds Avram Grant, who stepped down as coach after the 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

Appiah returns for a second spell in charge of the West African nation, having led his native Ghana to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. His previous stint as Black Stars coach came to an end after Ghana failed to advance from the group stages at Brazil 2014.

He will be tasked with leading Ghana to a second consecutive World Cup appearance in Russia next year, with the Black Stars currently sitting third behind leaders Egypt and second-place Uganda in Group E of African zone qualifying. Their next qualifier is a home match versus Congo on 28 August. Appiah will also take charge of Ghana’s qualifying campaign for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

As part of his role, Appiah will also take charge of the Ghanaian national team for locally-based players called Local Black Stars.
