The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 79 days to go!

In less than three months' time – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia.

That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown. Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

79 The number of people who have played and then coached at the FIFA World Cup™, a list that includes Diego Maradona, Jurgen Klinsmann, Didier Deschamps and Fabio Capello.

Only two of them, however, have won the Trophy on the pitch and then from the dugout: Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.

The Brazilian was the first to achieve the feat. Nicknamed the ‘Old Wolf’, Zagallo formed part of the gifted sides that won at Sweden 1958 and Chile 1962 and then returned to the World Cup stage to guide Brazil to glory at Mexico 1970.

Beckenbauer captained the West Germany side that lifted the Trophy on home soil in 1974. After than taking over as Mannschaft coach, Der Kaiser just missed out on the biggest prize in world football at Mexico 1986, where his side lost 3-2 to Argentina in the Final. He would complete his double four years later, however, as his Germany side gained revenge over La Albiceleste with a 1-0 victory in the showpiece match at Italy 1990.
