The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 84 days to go!

In less than three months' time – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia.

That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown. Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

84 - The number of African players who have scored at the FIFA World Cup™. The first of them was Egypt’s Abdelrahman Fawzi, who found the back of the net twice at Italy 1934. It was not until Mexico 1970, 36 years later, that the continent had another world finals representative – Morocco – and a second world finals goalscorer: Houmane Jarir. Africa’s leading all-time marksmen at the World Cup is Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, who has scored six goals in the competition, the last two of them coming at Brazil 2014. The last African to score in world football’s showpiece tournament is Algeria’s Abdelmoumene Djabou, in stoppage time of his side’s 2-1 defeat to Germany in the Round of 16 at Brazil 2014. In doing so, he added his name to an illustrious list that also features the likes of Roger Milla, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Rabah Madjer, Mustapha Hadji, and Rasheed Yekini.
