92 days to go: Spain nearing century of goals

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 92 days to go!

In less than four months – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia. That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown.

Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

92 - the number of goals Spain have scored to date in their 14 FIFA World Cup™ appearances. Iraragorri scored the first, a penalty against Brazil at Italy 1934, and Juan Mata the last to date, in the bittersweet 3-0 defeat of Australia that marked La Roja’s departure from Brazil 2014. The most memorable of those 92 goals was Andres Iniesta’s volley past Maarten Stekelenburg of the Netherlands with four minutes remaining of the Final at South Africa 2010, a strike that gave Spain their first world title.
