USA, Portugal play out a last-gasp thriller

As kick-off at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ edges closer every day, we at FIFA.com thought we would whet your appetite for the action.

With some outstanding games in store across June and July, we are going to focus in on highlights from some of the most memorable encounters from four years ago.

We were treated to excitement, drama, and an avalanche of goals at Brazil 2014, so what better way to get your imagination flowing for what may be around the corner this time!

USA 2-2 Portugal

22 June, Arena Amazonia, Manaus

Group G was the one everyone was talking about before the tournament got underway. Germany, Portugal, Ghana and USA presented six mouth-watering clashes between heavyweights from three continents. So, when Portgual arrived after a drubbing at the hands of Germany, while USA were flying high after a late victory, there was little chance of a tepid encounter.

So it proved on the edge of the rain forest in Manaus, with a thrilling match that saw the lead exchange hands twice and a thunderous equaliser from Jermaine Jones. Only a stunning header by Varela with 30 seconds left on the clock prolonged Portugal's hopes of reaching the next round and prevent the Stars and Stripes wrapping up the group with a game to spare.

In the end, despite defeat to Germany in their last game, USA clung on to escape the group, where they would eventually exit at the hands of Belgium, despite some Tim Howard heroics.
