Palmeiras down Flamengo to retain Libertadores crown

Palmeiras beat Flamengo 2-1 after extra-time in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Saturday to retain the Copa Libertadores title. In doing so, O Verdão earned the right to represent South America at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2021™, to be held in early 2022. Raphael Veiga scored after just five minutes to give Palmeiras an early lead. They held it until 18 minutes from time, when Gabriel Barbosa, the tournament’s leading scorer, pulled Flamengo level. With no further goals in normal time, the match was decided in extra-time, which was only six minutes old when Deyverson struck to give O Verdão a second consecutive Libertadores title and secure them a place at the FIFA Club World Cup for the second year running.
