11 days to go: Rooney-inspired United victorious in Yokohama

Manchester United capped off a memorable 2008, in which Sir Alex Ferguson’s men had lifted the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League, by winning the FIFA Club World Cup. Present at the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2000, United advanced to the final eight years later after a 5-3 thriller against Gamba Osaka, setting up a decider with Copa Libertadores winners LDU Quito.

Eventual adidas Golden Ball winner Wayne Rooney scored the solitary goal in the showpiece decider against the Ecuadorians in Yokohama, Japan on a night where Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the first of his four Club World Cup winners medals.
