Paraguay floor champions, Brazil win again

  • Japan’s Akaguma the day’s top scorer with hat-trick

  • Brazil score their 300th goal in the history of the competition

  • No team from Groups C or D yet through to last eight

Paraguay sprang a major surprise in beating Portugal on Sunday to leave Group C of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 wide open with one round of matches remaining.

In Group D, meanwhile, Brazil made it two wins out of two. With Tahiti and Japan both on three points, however, the four-time world champions are not yet sure of a place in the quarter-finals.

Results Group C: Paraguay 5-3 Portugal | Panama 2-2 UAE (UAE win 3-2 on pens) Group D: Tahiti 4-3 Japan | Poland 4-7 Brazil

Memorable moments *Paraguay show heart. The equation was simple for Los Pynandi: win or go home. And win they did, against defending champions Portugal no less. “We can say that we’re still dreaming,” Paraguay captain Jesus Lopez told FIFA.com. “As the skipper I asked just one thing of them: humility. We’re going to go into the next game showing the quality that’s always defined us: that guaraní* grit.”

A very special dedication. After scoring to put Brazil on the road to victory over Poland, Lucao ran to the centre of the pitch and pointed to a tattoo on his neck. He later explained that the tattoo reads “Lara”, the name of his daughter, who was born eight months ago today.

A nailbiting finale. Panama struck twice within a matter of seconds only for United Arab Emirates to hit back in a match that eventually went to extra time and then penalties. UAE’s hero of the hour was Humaid Jamal, who secured the win for his side by saving Panama’s fourth spot-kick. “I knew I had to be 200 times more focused than before,” he said afterwards. “I managed to stop it and I’m very happy. I want to thank God for everything. Now we have to think about the next match, which could see us go through to the next round.”
