Iran, Senegal, Italy and Switzerland all recorded wins as the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 got under way in Nassau on Thursday.

For the most part, however, they had to work hard for the points. While the Iranians had to come from behind to beat the Mexicans, the Swiss were pushed all the way by the hosts.

Memorable moments *The first of many *The honour of scoring the first goal of Bahamas 2017 went to Iran goalkeeper Peyman Hosseini, whose long-range strike put his side ahead against Mexico. “I’m very excited about scoring the first goal, but I’m even happier that my team won and that we’ve made a good start,” he told FIFA.com. “I’m truly delighted with the goal, though.”

Gabriele, the Juve fan It was quite a night for Italy’s Gabriele Gori, who scored six times in his side’s 12-6 defeat of Nigeria. The striker took every opportunity to show his appreciation for his beloved Juventus and his admiration for Paulo Dybala, celebrating each of his goals in the style of the Argentinian star.

A history-making strike There were 11 minutes on the clock when the Bahamas’ Leslie St Fleur was fouled in the middle of the pitch. The No10 lined up the free-kick and let fly with a powerful right-footed shot to score his country’s first goal in a FIFA tournament, sending the home fans wild. “The fact is I’m very proud to have scored the goal,” he said afterwards. “I’d like to thank the fans for all the support they gave us. This is for them.”
