Monday's FIFA World Cup qualifying results

  • England and Switzerland qualify for Qatar 2022

  • Four matches in Africa ahead of Tuesday's Round 2 finale

  • All of Monday's scores and headlines

Another momentous day of FIFA World Cup™ qualifying took place in Africa and Europe, with play-off spots and tickets to next year's finals decided in the latter.

European champions Italy failed to secure a direct ticket and will have to go through the play-off after a goalless draw in Northern Ireland. Switzerland seized the opportunity and defeated Bulgaria 4-0 to win the direct ticket from Group C, while England thrashed San Marino 10-0 to ensure they will be on the plane to Qatar at the end of next year.

The stakes were lower in Africa, meanwhile, although there was plenty of pride at stake as the second round wrapped up for eight already-eliminated teams.
