'Tekkz' wins season-opening FUT Champions Cup

  • 'Tekkz' opens the season with a title for the third time in a row

  • FNATIC’s new recruit wins fifth FUT Champions Cup overall

  • Overview of the main action from FUT Champions Cup #1 in Bucharest

Group stage

As has been the case the last few seasons, 'Tekkz' opened his competitive FIFA campaign with a bang. The Englishman, who was representing new team FNATIC at a tournament for the first time, got his campaign under way by cruising to five wins out of five – the best performance of anyone on that console. Only PlayStation's 'Fifilza' managed the same feat of 5-0.

Not everyone enjoyed similar success, however, with current FIFA eWorld Cup champion 'MoAuba' and other big names such as 'DaXe', 'GoalMachine' and 'The Royal' having to pack their bags and head home after the first day.

Round of 16

There were also a few upsets when it got down to the last 32. 'Nicolas99fc', one of the tournament favourites, came off second-best in a South-American match-up with 'LucasRep98'. Elsewhere, 'Tuga' went down to 'Jeffryy', 'MegaBit' lost the France-Germany tussle against 'Rafsou', and 2018 eWorld Cup winner 'Msdossary' surprisingly came unstuck at the hands of 'Spiderkong'.

Quarter-finals

'Deto', the 2017 eWorld Cup runner-up, made it through to the quarter-finals but lost to 'LucasRep98'. Two other ties went to penalties, with 'WestHamYago' defeating 'Maestro' and 'DullenMike' knocking out 'NR7' to advance to the the semis after a pair of thrilling contests. 'FUTWIZ Lyricz' also caused an upset, sending 'Rafsou' home after the latter had previously eliminated Michael 'MegaBit' Bittner.

Semi-finals

Xbox 'Tekkz' 4-0 'Spiderkong' 'FUTWIZ Lyricz' 2-0 'DullenMike'

The console final would not see a match-up of two former FUT Champions Cup winners. While 'Tekkz' fulfilled his end of the bargain, 'DullenMike' – who shocked the e-world last season with his FUT Champions Cup win – came up short in the semi-finals against 'Lyricz'.

PlayStation 'Fifilza' 1-0 'Crazy' 'LucasRep98' 1-5 'WestHamYago'

After 'Fifilza' saw off Italy’s 'Crazy' in the first semi, 'WestHamYago' recorded a resounding victory over 'LucasRep98' to prevent an all-Brazilian console final.

Console finals

'Tekkz' 2-1 'FUTWIZ Lyricz' 'Fifilza' 6-2 'WestHamYago'

'Tekkz' lived up to his favourite tag but was made to work for his win right up until the final whistle, with fellow Englishman 'FUTWIZ Lyricz' pushing him all the way before going down 2-1 over the two legs. 'Fifilza' meanwhile, who represents Wolverhampton Wanderers, had a far easier time of things, strolling to a 6-2 win over last year’s FIFA eNations Cup runner-up 'WestHamYago' of Argentina.

Grand Final

'Tekkz' 3-0 'Fifilza'

This was a duel between two unstoppable forces with England’s 'Tekkz' and Brazil's 'Fifilza' both unbeaten at the tournament coming into the Grand Final. 'Tekkz' took the first leg 1-0 then pulled clear in the second, winning that one 2-0 to secure overall victory. It marked his first title of the season and also his first with his new club. It is the fifth time that 'Tekkz’ has lifted the FUT Champions Cup trophy and third time in a row that he has done so to open the season.
