Sporting Limpeno make history for Paraguay

A last-minute winner from Damia Cortaza has sealed a dramatic and historic Copa Libertadores Femenina title for Sportivo Limpeno who became Paraguay’s first-ever winner of the competition.

The Paraguayan champions came-from-behind against Venezuela’s Estudiantes de Guarico for a 2-1 victory in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, on Tuesday.

The Paraguayans, who eliminated Brazil’s Foz Cataratas in the semi-finals, fell behind as Paola Villamizar scored ten minutes into the second half. Lis Pena equalised 15 minutes later, before Cortaza nabbed the title-winning goal in dramatic fashion.

Brazilian representatives had won six of the seven previous editions held to date, with only Chile’s Colo Colo breaking that streak in 2012.

Foz Cataratas claimed third place with a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win over Uruguay’s Colon following a scoreless draw.
