Marta, Cristiane, Kaka mourn loss of Vadao

  • Former Brazil's women's coach passes away aged 63

  • He died in a Sao Paulo hospital after battle with liver cancer

  • CBF: "A loyal professional, he never spared any efforts"

Marta, Cristiane and Kaka have led the tributes to former Brazil coach Vadao, who passed away after a battle with cancer today.

Vadao took Brazil to the Round of 16 at the last two FIFA Women's World Cups™ and led them to a fourth-place finish at the Women's Olympic Football Tournament on home soil in 2016.

He coached several clubs in his home country and helped develop the likes of Rivaldo and Kaka.

"Really sad, an enormous loss,” said former Brazil striker Luis Fabiano, who shot to stardom under Vadao at Sao Paulo in 2001. "As well as being a great human being, Vadao was an excellent professional. He was really important during my first spell at Sao Paulo. He knew me from Ponte [Preta] and was one of those responsible for betting on me when I was still young. I will be forever grateful."

"I’m eternally grateful to you for opening the doors to a kid that nobody knew and few believed in," wrote Kaka. "But you had belief, taught me, gave me opportunities for me to fly. It’s a really sad day, but the memories in my heart are of great joy."

"Go in peace, teacher, your mission on this earth has been fulfilled with great success,” wrote Marta on Instagram. "I don’t know another human being the same, you knew how to live life in a dignified and honest way. I’m so proud to have lived wonderful moments by your side and to have had the opportunity to learn so much. Thank you for everything and rest in peace."

"I’m trying to take in and understand your departure so soon,” wrote Cristiane on Instagram. "There are people who come into our lives in a way that we don’t always expect, people who, in such a short time, become our family. You were an unbelievably kind person, with an gigantic heart.

"You loved this cap – it was your trademark! Your time in this life was beautiful. You were a father, friend, teacher and partner to everyone around you.

“May you be cared for up above by God, and here down below I will ALWAYS keep you in my life and my heart. Thank you for being sunshine and love. I love you, teacher."

"Thank you for the teachings, the opportunity to work by your side, and for being this wonderful person Vadao,” wrote Debinha on Instagram. "A good man with a huge and kind heart. You will remain eternally in our memories. Rest in peace teacher."
