Goalkeepers join the party

  • The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award to be given for first time

  • A panel of FIFA Legends will decide the three nominees

  • The winner will be revealed at the Awards Gala on 23 October in London

As a sport, football is far from being an exact science. Indeed, finding consensus on matters related to the beautiful game is nigh-on impossible. However, there is one thing on which almost everyone agrees –  and that is when it comes to playing positions, the job of a goalkeeper is the most thankless one of all.

For all that, 23 October 2017 will be an evening to remember for all those who don the gloves and assume the last line of defence for their teams. That is because on that night in London, The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award will be given for first time.

“The role that goalkeepers play in football is as important as it is specific, even if they often fail to get the recognition they deserve,” said FIFA Deputy Secretary General, Zvonimir Boban.

“So that’s why we’re proud to introduce this accolade, as we’ll not only be honouring those who score the goals, but also those who play an equally important role in preventing them,” he added.

In deciding on the nominees, the panel will take into account goalkeeping performances (irrespective of league or nationality) in the period from November 2016 to July 2017. The three nominees will be announced in the near future, with the eventual winner receiving their trophy at The Best FIFA Football Awards Gala in London.
