24 female players and 30 male players in contention

The identities of the players in the running for the FIFA World Player 2005 and FIFA Women’s World Player 2005 awards are now known.

In time-honoured tradition, the winners will be announced and presented with their awards at the FIFA World Player Gala on 19 December, which is now in its fifteenth year. The setting will once again be the Zurich Opera House, the glorious backdrop for last year’s ceremony.

The preliminary lists of players in the running for football’s ultimate personal accolades have been drawn up by international experts sitting on FIFA’s committees. 24 female players have been nominated by the Committee for Women’s Football and FIFA Women's Competitions, as well as by women’s football experts on other FIFA committees. Similarly, a list of 30 male players has been established by the Football Committee and the Technical and Development Committee.

As was the case last year, the coaches and captains of men’s and women’s national teams all around the world will be eligible to vote. They have all received the lists of players and will have several weeks in which to submit their vote.

FIFA will announce the three male and three female players with the most votes in late November or early December.

Furthermore, at the 15th FIFA World Player Gala, world football’s governing body will present the FIFA Presidential Award and the FIFA Fair Play Award for 2005. The FIFA Interactive World Player 2005 – the winner of the second FIFA Interactive World Cup, which will reach its conclusion in London on the eve of the Gala – will also be honoured.
