A product of the Samuel Eto’o Academy, Andre Onana arrived in Europe in style, joining Barcelona’s fabled youth academy in 2010. His performances with the club’s youth teams soon got him noticed by Europe’s other leading side, with Ajax eventually winning the race for his signature in early 2015.
Onana did not take long to repay the faith the Dutch club had shown in him, producing a string of fine displays between the posts while establishing himself in the first XI for the 2016/17 season. Called up for the first time by Cameroon coach Hugo Broos in May 2016, he won his maiden cap that September against Gabon. With his cousin Fabrice Ondoa ahead of him in the pecking order for the Indomitable Lions No1 jersey, Onana turned down Broos’s invitation to form part of his squad for the 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, deciding instead to keep his place with Ajax.
