Perth-born centre-back Trent Sainsbury has spent the majority of 2017 with Italian giants Internazionale, joining the Serie A side on loan at the end of January from Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning. A regular in the Socceroos defence – whether it be centre or right-back – Sainsbury suffered the agony of missing out on the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ through injury. Since making his senior debut in September 2014, however, he has established himself as an integral part of Australia’s backline.

A graduate of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2011, Sainsbury made the move from Central Coast Mariners to Dutch Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, where he lifted the Dutch Cup in his debut season in the Netherlands. The 23-year-old has also tasted success on the international scene, lifting the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Sainsbury started every game of that Asian Cup campaign, scoring a crucial goal in the semi-final against United Arab Emirates and claiming the Man of the Match award in the final against Korea Republic.
