THE DAY REPLAYED – Cristiano Ronaldo and Oribe Peralte were the match-winners for their respective sides on Matchday 2 in Group A.

The Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year headed the reigning European champions in front as early as the eighth minute against tournament hosts Russia, a goal that was enough to earn Portugal their first victory at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017. The Iberians now top the standings with four points and go into their final group fixture with arguably the easiest task against New Zealand.

That is because the Kiwis' 2-1 defeat to Mexico means they can no longer progress to the knockout rounds, despite battling hard throughout and causing the Mexicans real problems. Chris Wood's strike in the 42nd minute gave the Oceania representatives hope of pulling off a remarkable upset, but the highly-fancied Mexicans came from behind to win thanks to goals from Raul Jimenez (54') and Peralta (72'). Mexico are now on four points, meaning a draw against Russia (three points) on Saturday would be enough for El Tri to reach the next stage. The hosts, however, must win in order to qualify for the semi-finals.

Just as he was in the 2-2 draw against Mexico, Ronaldo was voted as the Budweiser Man of the Match against the Sbornaja by fans around the globe. In the day's second game it was Mexico's Javier Aquino who took that honour.
