FIFA showcased a dazzling palette of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ multimedia services at the first World Broadcaster Meeting (WBM) in Rio de Janeiro on 24-25 April 2013, giving a mouth-watering taste of how the tournament will come to life for millions of football fans across the globe.

From start-of-the-art tablet and smart phone applications to a comprehensive array of live and recorded match, build up and non-match footage from 32 TV Team crews and TV story crews of FIFA, the WBM signalled the start of the television and multimedia production countdown to footballs flagship event.

At the occasion of the WBM, FIFA’s TV Director Niclas Ericson also announced that FIFA will work with Official Partner Sony to embark on a test of 4K visual technology at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013, which kicks-off on 15 June 2013 in Brasilia.

4K technology enables broadcasters to capture football action in some of the highest quality visuals available, which can be stored and used to their full, stunning potential in years to come when the consumer television market has caught up with the next generation science.

“The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil begins in earnest this week for leading broadcasters from across the planet,” said Ericson. “The FIFA WBM here in Rio is our chance to share with them the exciting offer of coverage, content and services we will make available for broadcast and multimedia platforms and it is their chance to start (and in many cases continue) planning for the greatest festival of football on earth.”

The event, which brought together 400 broadcast professionals representing 192 territories at Rio’s Sofitel Copacabana hotel, gave broadcasters and multimedia executives their first detailed sight of the technical and practical aspects of covering the biggest single sporting event on the planet.

FIFA TV and its appointed broadcaster HBS updated the media rights licensees on the IBC (International Broadcast Center) set up, studio and stadium production facilities, content services and host operations at the 12 venues across Brazil. The IBC will be based at RioCentro in Rio de Janeiro. The event also featured presentations from the Local Organising Committee and Brazilian government agencies, covering tournament preparations in Brazil.

Broadcasters can now start planning the budgets and activities of expected more than 13,000 broadcast personnel due to cover the FIFA World Cup.

The 2014 edition in Brazil promises to be a first-class multimedia extravaganza, from the finest television production teams delivering extensive match coverage from every angle and colourful features on Brazilian culture to ground-breaking social media applications that will transform the way fans experience the tournament.

The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes welcomed broadcasters with an upbeat promise to deliver an exceptional World Cup experience for fans, national team delegations and the media.“With an event like this, we can showcase the flavour of Rio so that the participants can get an idea of the culture and diversity of this city," he said. "We want to consolidate this image that Rio is a place for celebrations, and, at the same time, a city in transformation which will welcome very well all the fans coming for the FIFA World Cup. The FIFA World Cup itself is fantastic, but the legacy it leaves in the transformations in the various areas, like transportation, and the excitement it brings to the city go even beyond."

FIFA will deliver a rich and expanded content offer for all media platforms in Brazil including television, desktop computers, and giant screens while also fully embracing the explosion of interactive possibilities offered by the very latest tablets and smart phones, Ericson said.
