Two-time winner Julio Baptista to take part in FIFA Confederations Cup draw

The Official Draw for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 will feature a very special guest, whose footballing career is intertwined with the tournament. Julio Baptista will be on stage in Kazan on 26 November; the Brazilian midfielder will be reunited with the trophy that he won at back-to-back tournaments, in 2005 and 2009.

“Some of the brightest moments in my career happened during the FIFA Confederations Cup. In fact, my first cap with the national team came against Japan in the 2001 edition,” said 35-year-old Baptista, who currently plays for MLS outfit Orlando City in the USA.

“The idea of gathering all the continental champions in a single tournament is fantastic. I am really proud to somehow be involved in the 2017 edition.”

The FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 will take place from 17 June to 2 July, with the presence of world champions Germany, hosts Russia, and the champions of all six confederations – Australia (AFC), Chile (CONMEBOL), Mexico (CONCACAF), Portugal (UEFA) and New Zealand (OFC), with Africa’s representative to be determined in February 2017.

The draw will see the eight teams divided into two groups of four. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held in Kazan and Sochi, while the final will take place in Saint Petersburg.
