The FIFA Technical Study Group selected Xabi Alonso as their Budweiser Man of the Match following Spain's 3-2 defeat of South Africa in Sunday's match for third place. The Liverpool midfielder scored his side's winner in extra time and exerted a big influence throughout the game.
"Xabi Alonso put in yet another very solid performance," commented TSG member Holger Osieck of Germany, who was following proceedings closely from the stands at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. "He was Spain's leader in midfield and was very influential in the way he organised his team, especially in the centre of the pitch. He closed down his opponents whenever necessary and also scored the winning goal."
The TSG (Technical Study Group) carries out in-depth analysis of the latest trends in the game and keeps FIFA's member associations fully informed of all tactical innovations. To find out more about the members of the TSG analysing the tournament click on the link in the right-hand menu.
