Aussie skipper Jedinak ruled out

  • Australia captain Mile Jedinak ruled out of Russia 2017

  • Young midfielder James Jeggo called into the squad

  • Second injury replacement for the Socceroos

Australia have suffered a blow on the eve of the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 with captain Mile Jedinak ruled out.

The Aston Villa-based Jedinak pulled up sore after last week's FIFA World Cup™ qualifier against Saudi Arabia, having battled groin problems over the past few months.

Jedinak skippered the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup, and led the team to their maiden AFC Asian Cup success in 2015.

Jedinak’s place in Australia’s 23-man squad has been taken by fellow midfielder James Jeggo. Vienna-born and Melbourne-raised, the uncapped Jeggo is renowned as a lively presence in midfield with a strong technique.

Winner of the A-League Player of the Year in 2015 after a stellar season with Adelaide United, Jeggo now plies his trade for Sturm Graz.

Full-back Brad Smith was earlier ruled out of the squad after suffering a hamstring strain in the Socceroos’ 3-2 Russia 2018 qualifying win over Saudi Arabia last Thursday. Alex Gersbach came into the squad in place of Smith.

Australia will conclude their Confederations Cup preparations with a home international against Brazil on Tuesday evening.
