There was praise for New Zealand from both coaches at the post-match press conference.

New Zealand manager Anthony Hudson said his team started the stronger of the two teams and "never accepted the result". He said they had eight goal-scoring chances. "AT 2-0 we could have kept the scoreline respectable, but we didn't... We had three strikers on the pitch and got caught at the end." Hudson also said that he considers Portugal favourites for the title.

Fernando Santos says: "I warned my players to not let them win balls in the air, and the team reacted well. I think the New Zealand team deserved to score a goal... and they're a team with great spirit and capacity." About his side, the coach said the loss of Pepe to suspension may be a blessing in disguise because a new player might emerge in his place in the semi-finals.

Another improved and brave performance by New Zealand after that ugly opening loss to Russia. They never got under the skin of Portugal like they did Mexico, but they were confident enough to keep attacking through the second period, which ultimately made the scoreline a little harsh. The may have given up a handful more goals without the heroics of Marinovic in goal, but they also could have grabbed one or two of their own. A promising young team that has their eyes on a return to Russia next year for the World Cup. Based on their quick learning curve, one wouldn't count them out - even though they are a long shot to get past South American opponents in the qualifying play-off if they survive a two-legged tie with Solomon Islands.
