Auckland City have secured a first-leg advantage in the OFC O-League final after beating Tefana 2-1 at home.

The side from New Zealand are halfway to claiming continental glory, and with it a place at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2012, but their opponents from Tahiti retain hope of an upset after their late away goal.

The second leg will take place on 12 May in Papeete, with the winner joining Mexican side Monterrey as the first sides to book their spot in Japan for the December tournament.

A close match saw Auckland fail to finish their opportunities in the opening period, but two goals in four second-half minutes appeared to give Ramon Tribulietx’s men daylight.

First, on 56 minutes, Dave Mulligan converted a rebound after Daniel Koprivcic’s effort was parried, before the latter doubled Auckland’s lead on the hour mark.

The visitors ensured that all is still to play for in Tahiti in a fortnight, however, when substitute Axel Williams scored within moments of entering the action to grab a crucial away goal for Tefana.
