12 days to go: Maldini’s Milan end Brazilian reign

The first three editions of the FIFA Club World Cup ended with a Brazilian side lifting the trophy. But with no samba representatives at Japan 2007 – Argentina’s Boca Juniors were carrying the mantle for South America this time around – the Club World Cup champions would hail from a new nation.

Adding to their three Intercontinental Cup titles, an AC Milan side with a gluttony of talent – from Paolo Maldini and Andrea Pirlo to Clarence Seedorf and Kaka – became the first European side to lift the Club World Cup trophy. They did so after seeing off Boca in a six-goal final thriller.

The FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019 gets under way on 11 December.
