FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup history
Paraguay 2019 will be Switzerland’s fifth participation at the Beach Soccer World Cup. Their best showing to date came at UAE 2009, when they were runners-up to Brazil. In subsequent editions they finished tenth in 2011, eighth in 2015, and fifth in 2017.
The road to Paraguay
The qualification journey was anything but easy for Switzerland. Indeed, they were the only European side to lose three times (once to eventual champions Russia and twice to Belarus – the second of these in the match for third place) and still qualify. Key to their success was a 9-6 win over Spain in the second group phase, which they then followed up with a 3-2 defeat of Azerbaijan to secure their ticket.
Did you know…?
- Pivots Philipp Borer (nine) and Dejan Stankovic (seven) were Switzerland’s top-scorers during qualifying, accounting for 41 per cent of their side’s goals.
- With five qualifications, Switzerland now rank fourth among European teams in terms of World Cup appearances.
- Coach Angelo Schirinzi has participated in all four of Switzerland’s prior trips to the finals: he was player/coach in 2009 and 2011, a player in 2015 and coach in 2017. He also coached Tahiti when they hosted in 2013.
